The day begins with an early departure from San José and scenic ride to the Pacific port city of Puntarenas. Board the world famous yacht "Calypso", gleaming with varnished hardwoods and polished brass, for the 1½ hour cruise to Punta Coral.
Accesible only by boat, Punta Coral is the easternmost tip of the Peninsula of Nicoya. Located in front of the National Park Islands of Negritos, this privately owned point of dry tropical forest has a quiet beach and valley filled with flowering plants on one side and intresting rock formations and numerous caves on the other.
Spend the late morning on the easy to walk nature trails. The many varieties of trees and interesting plants are labeled and the ocean views are spectacular. Day 1: Saturday, Puntarenas.(Departure time from San José; 13:30 hrs) Embark in Puntarenas after a scenic 90-minute drive along the Pan American Highway. A sleepy fishing village, Puntarenas is characterized by its older wooden buildings painted in bright colors. The boardwalk is complete with open-air restaurants and quaint shops that are the attractions of this laid-back town. The Temptress Explorer and her crew will be awating your arrival with a "welcome aborad" cocktail party, followed by an introduction to the ship. After dinner you will adjourn to the lounge for the first evening briefings on the next day´s destinations and choices of activities.
Day 2: Sunday, Curú/Tortuga. You will awaken offshore from Curú Wildlife Refuge, a 208-acre protected area that patches of dry forest and varied coastal ecosystems. After breakfast, you will go ashore to explore Curú´s tropical forests and its three scenic beaches which are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Despite its small size, the reserve offers sanctuary to a surprising diversity of plants and animals, including more than 110 species of land and sea birds ranging from the great figate bird to delicate flycatchers, and such easy-to-spot animals as the black iguana and the capuchin monkey. From Curú you´ll head beautiful Tortuga Island, where the white sand is washed by emerald green water, inviting you for a refreshing swim. Other choices are sea kayaking, volleyball, or simply relaxing in the soft breeze under the shade of a coconut palm.
Day 3: Monday, Corcovado National Park/San Josecito. Experience the conservation area for an early morning bird-watching hike. The scarlet macaws are the most spectacular, as they loudly announce their arrival with high-pitched squawks. If you hear a cry like a puppy, look for a toucan hopping through the trees, with its outlandish yelow bill. For a change of peace, you may want to paddle up the Agujitas River in a kayak or enjoy snorkeling, swimming or realxing in the sun.
Day 4: Tuesday, Caño Island. Spotted dolphins riding the boat´s bow wave and flying fish jumping off the top of the ocean swells often escort the traveler to the island. Between December and April, 40-ton humpback whales visit from their feeding grounds in Alaska. The island is ringed with turquoise water that holds an abundance of coral-covered stone reefs teeming with brilliantly colored tropical fish easily spotted by divers. Venture through the jungle and examine pre-Columbian artifacts or marvel at the perfect stone spheres. These enigmatic spheres have baffled scientists and researchers for centuries. Their origin and significance continue to remain a mystery.
Day 5: Wednesday, Golfo Dulce/Golfito. Located on the eastern shore of the Golfo Dulce is a little slice of heaven-an 800-acre, palm-lined and orchid-trimmed beach. Since you´re at the foot of the rain forest, you can take a hike among toucans and monkeys. Or simply enjoy a tranquil afternoon on the secluded beach.
Day 6: Thursday, Corcovado Conservation Area (Caletas)/Dake Bay. This 10,000-acre sanctuaryn of biological diversity dominates the Osa Peninsula, in the southwest corner of the country. The park´s 13 habitats are characterized by an abundance of endangered wildlife including all four species of monkeys and six species of wild cats found in the country. Giant trees draped with vines and lianas, and supported by massive roots, tower over the forest floor. Nearly 300 species of birds live in Corcovado. Caletas Beach offers some good areas for kayaking, swimming and snorkeling, but please exercise caution as tides and swells can be strong.
Day 7: Friday, Manuel Antonio National Park. One of the highlights of your cruise, this park is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is composed of three long strands of magnificent white-sand beach set between an exuberant jungle with hundreds of fascinating plant species and estuaries on one side and the magnificent Pacific Ocean on the other. While hiking through Manuel Antonio´s open forest trails you may spot iguanas, squirrel, monkeys and lazy three-toed sloths. Have lunch on the sun deck and prepare for an afternoon of water sports and leisure beach time.
